The issue of integrated schooling has been discussed in Ireland for almost 200 years – since the setting up of the National School system across the island in the 1830s. Now a parent-led movement, it began with the founding of Lagan College, Belfast, in 1981 with 28 pupils. It now comprises 7% of the pupils in N Ireland – 62 schools and 22,000 pupils.
Colm Cavanagh will talk about “WHY Integrated Education?” and Dr Anne Murray will discuss “HOW children are educated in an integrated school”.
Colm Cavanagh is the President for NI Council for Integrated Education and is currently the Managing Director of Foyle Waterfront, Derry. Colm has previously worked in the areas of Community and Economic Development and has been involved in the promotion of integrated education since the 1970’s.
Dr Anne Murray is a founder member of Foyle Trust for Integrated Education and founding principal of Oakgrove Integrated Primary School and Nursery. Dr Murray has devoted 25 years to successfully promoting and developing Integrated Education in the North West.
The event will run from 12.30pm – 2.00pm on Wednesday 3rd December at Holywell – DiverseCity Community Partnership, 8-14 Bishop Street and is open for all to attend. A light lunch will be provided. Please phone Marjorie on (028) 7126 1941.
