TRUSTS AND SUPPORT ORGANISATIONS FOR INTEGRATED EDUCATION
There are several Charitable Trusts for Integrated Education across Northern Ireland which have helped establish Integrated schools in their area of operation. Some of the Trusts then retain positions on the Board of Governors on these schools. Several of these Groups, together with the schools they represented set up NICIE in 1987 and were signatories to the original Memorandum and Articles when NICIE took Company status in 1989. For this reason there are still three ‘Support Organisation’ positions on NICIE’s Board of Directors to which the remaining Trusts can elect members at a NICIE AGM.
The list of the Trusts and other support organisation includes:
ACT played seminal roles in the establishment of, among others, Lagan College, Forge and All Children’s Controlled Integrated Primary Schools and Strangford and Ulidia Integrated Colleges. Jonathan Bardon has written a history of this group: ‘The Struggle for Shared Schools in Northern Ireland. The history of All Children Together.’ Copies of this book are available from the NICIE offices.
This Trust was involved in the establishment of Hazelwood Integrated Primary School (IPS) and Hazelwood Integrated College in North Belfast. Later BELTIE supported the development of Cranmore IPS in South Belfast, Lough View IPS in Castlereagh and Millennium in Carryduff. In 2008, at the time of the credit crunch, the Trust came to the aid of newly established schools such as Phoenix in Cookstown.
Foyle Trust members were involved in the establishment of Oakgrove IPS and Oakgrove College in Derry/ Londonderry in 1991 and 1992. Members of the Foyle Trust later supported Roe Valley IPS in opening in Limavady in 2004 and the transformation of Groarty CIPS in 2005.
This was established in 1992 and for the first 5 years it was run from NICIE. In 1997 it employed its first staff and has since developed in a major grant making fund supporting new and existing integrated schools and sharing education projects.

This Group helped to establish Portadown IPS in 1990 and supported the first transformation, that of Brownlow Controlled Integrated College in 1991
This Trust supported the establishment of Mill Strand IPS in Portrush in 1987 and North Coast Integrated College in Coleraine in 1996. It was also connected with the establishment of several Integrated Primary Schools including Oakgrove, Acorn, Cedar and Corran. NICIE has been advised that the Trust wound up its activities in 2012.
SUTIE helped to establish Bridge Integrated Primary School in Banbridge in 1987 and Portadown IPS in 1990. Then in 1995, SUTIE supported the establishment of Integrated College Dungannon and New-Bridge Integrated College.
This Trust supported the establishment of the Enniskillen schools and Omagh schools; Enniskillen IPS in 1989 and Erne Integrated College in 1994, Omagh IPS in 1990 and Drumragh IC in 1995.
