Bar Mock Trials NI 2016

1847Bar Mock Trials NI 2016

New Derry/Londonderry heat

 now open for years 11-14

The Bar Mock Trials Competition inspires young people to take part in society as equal members. This involves helping to understand the law, politics and democratic life. It also promotes participation, helps citizenship teachers and works with young people on issues that matter to them. Most of all it gives young people the knowledge, skills and confidence to be effective citizens and legally capable.

Dr Anne Rice will be promoting and organising the competition across Northern Ireland. Anne will be encouraging schools to participate, especially those who have never been involved before. She will conduct outreach work with participating schools, including providing extra support to teachers. In addition to the longstanding Belfast heat a second heat will take place in Derry/Londonderry.

Now in its 25th successful year, it involves over 2,000 students, 300 barristers and advocates and 90 judges from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Bar Mock Trial Competition is the only nationwide educational challenge involving real judges in real courts. It brings the law to life for young people and allows them to become part of the largest, practical, court-based public legal education project.

Teachers and young people in Northern Ireland will love the easy-to-implement, customisable programmes and teaching materials at hand to help bring the subject to life and fully engage participants. The whole process will improve educational attainment whilst building ‘character’ in young people – developing more rounded and more employable individuals who are better able to contribute positively to school life and to the community. Most importantly they will be provided with ‘quality assured’ experts (such as lawyers) who will play an active and inspiring role.

The competition is now open for years 11-14. The competition’s regional heats in Northern Ireland will take place during November 2016(dates to be confirmed)
