Peter Weir sets out key priorities as Education Minister

Education Minister, Peter Weir, said today that his priority will be ensuring all children and young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Education Minister, Peter Weir, said: “Every child is different and all deserve the best start in life. The bringing together of a wider range of child-focused responsibilities in the restructured Department of Education reflects the Executive’s commitment to supporting all of our children and young people. As Minister I am looking forward to working with our schools; our early childhood education and childcare providers; and our youth services to ensure that, together, we can meet the needs and nurture the aspirations of our children and young people.

“Education is at the core of any society, and is not just about schools – it is about the development of our children’s personalities, talents and abilities to their fullest potential. This can only be achieved by all government departments working together and with others to ensure the best outcomes for our children and young people.

“The future stability of our society and the success of our economy depend on there being a high quality education system that can stand alongside the best in the world. I am ambitious for our children and young people and determined to ensure that educational outcomes improve across every part of Northern Ireland in every school in every sector.”

Peter Weir said: “As Education Minister, I do not underestimate the challenges that lie ahead in my aim of a first class education system that delivers for all our children.

“The Executive is facing very challenging financial pressures which will impact on school budgets. My priority is to ensure funding is targeted at helping and supporting our children and young people and I will work with my Department, the Education Authority and schools to make sure this happens.”
