World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is annually held on 21 May to help people learn about the importance of cultural diversity and harmony.
Integrated College Dungannon in partnership with ArtsEkta – Northern Ireland’s leading ethnic arts organisation, held a ‘One World Day’ of arts and cultural activities with Year 8.
Students and teachers at Integrated College Dungannon welcomed artists and cultural facilitators, now living in Northern Ireland, to share in a day’s activities of arts, dialogue, cultural exchange and fun.
Delivering six workshops in Polish dancing, Chinese martial arts and flag dancing, African drumming, Russian arts and crafts, Indian arts and crafts and a lesson on Islamic cultural views, every student in Year 8 had the opportunity to participate in each workshop. The event enabled the students to appreciate the richness and diversity of cultures in a practical and fun way and to recognise and to challenge, prejudice and discrimination.
Miss Rachel Copeland, EAL Tutor at Integrated College Dungannon said, “We are delighted to have ArtsEkta join us to celebrate UN World Day for Culture. This is an important day on our college calendar, which complements our ethos of ‘Learning Together’ and celebrating diversity. The students have had a wonderful, fun day participating in the workshops which were both engaging and insightful.”
