What integration means to us
On Wednesday 3rd December over 80 young people representing all integrated primary schools and colleges gathered together in the Stormont Hotel to discuss the Education Committee Inquiry into Shared and Integrated Education. Students from years 6, 7, 10 and post 16 took part in interactive workshops responding to the terms of reference of the recent Education Committee Inquiry into Shared and Integrated Education.
Members of the Education Committee, Michelle McIlveen, Sandra Overend and Robin Newton joined the proceedings to hear young people’s views at first hand on why integrated education matters to them and to society.
Noreen Campbell, CEO of NICIE said, “NICIE believes that the voice of young people needs to be heard in this inquiry; they are the experts on integrated education. They can describe how an integrated education impacts on friendships, and on learning and how it prepares them for being active citizens contributing to a peaceful, cohesive and prosperous society.”
As an outcome of the student parliament, young people will produce a report of their recommendations for the inquiry.
