21st August 2014

There were many reasons to celebrate in various departments at Blackwater Integrated College this week with students achieving 6 A*s in GCSE Art and Design and the BTEC Sport and GCSE Technology classes both gaining 100% A*-C, to mention just a few. The Signature Project and other effective interventions in the College helped students to earn the excellent results in all areas, helped as always by the dedication and hard work of the teaching staff at Blackwater.

Some notable performances came from two students who have level 5 statements of special needs: both achieved 8 GCSEs at grade C and above including in English and Mathematics.

Congratulations must go to Killyleagh student Holly Cranston who gained 11 GCSEs at grades A* to C and to Ellen Stewart and Erin Morrison who each achieved 10 GCSEs at grade C and above.

Holly was accompanied by Mrs Lorna Marshall who confirmed her delight that these excellent results now enable Holly to progress to her chosen A level course while Mrs Stewart referred to the positive and happy experience Ellen enjoyed at Blackwater which supported her in attaining these very pleasing grades.

Head girl, Maria Mackin, and head boy Marc Davey also achieved 9 and 10 GCSEs respectively including in English and Mathematics. Mrs Anne Mackin conveyed her delight that Maria’s hard work, combined with the dedication and positive attitude in the college community contributed to Maria’s success.

Mrs Sandra Davey observed: ‘I am so pleased and proud of my son! These are fabulous results. Marc is now able to move on to his chosen career. Blackwater has been a fantastic experience for Marc and has given him every opportunity to succeed. Staff must be congratulated on the dedication shown to all pupils throughout Key Stages 3 and 4. It is down to their constant support that pupils in Blackwater achieve such excellent results.’

Crossgar student, Callum Donaldson achieved 9 GCSEs. He was accompanied by his mother who was thrilled with his grades and thanked staff who were totally committed to ensuring the pupils achieved their best possible results.

Many other students exceeded both personal and staff targets. All in the college are justifiably proud of another set of excellent results with the percentage of students achieving 5+ GCSEs at A*- C likely to remain above the NI Average for similar schools for the second year in a row and the 4% rise in the key indicator of 5+ GCSEs including English and Maths results giving confirmation of Blackwater’s continuing success.

Principal, Dr Olwen Griffith, recognised the importance of parental support and thanked the staff for their continuing hard work with all students.
