Drumragh IC Pupil Selected To Take Part In The Amnesty Youth Advisory Group

Jamie Harkin

Jamie Harkin a Year 10 pupil from Drumragh Integrated College was selected to be part of The Amnesty Youth Advisory Group. Jamie has been an active member of the Amnesty Group which is held in Drumragh College.

Jamie recently travelled to London to debate and discuss global and national issues. Mrs J Wilson (Head of R.E) spoke of Jamie’s recent achievements “ It is a fantastic opportunity for Jamie to be part of the Youth Advisory Group, we are extremely proud of his successes and we are all looking forward to listening to his experiences with the group in the year to come.”

Jamie wrote of his experience; “I was extremely fortunate to be one of the twenty young people selected from the United Kingdom for The Amnesty Youth Advisory Group 2015/2016. I will have the privilege of flying to London four times this year to join the other successful candidates in discussion, debate and communication on both a national and global scale tackling human right violations; one story and one part of the world at a time. I have just returned from my first meeting at the Amnesty International UK Headquarters and it has been such an incredible experience. Meeting people from every background in one diverse atmosphere is something special along, so I am thrilled to be part of this exclusive and very active movement for today, tomorrow and the future. I have been a member of Amnesty International here in Drumragh for over three years so this massive step to represent on a national scale is challenging yet so worthwhile to millions of people on a yearly basis. So far, our team have touched on many issues but have so many more to conquer which will be achieved at the upcoming planned meetings. Here at the College, we are encouraged by Mrs Wilson, who is currently leading the group in the school. She encouraged me to apply to the Youth Advisory Group. I sent in my application a few months ago and I was thrilled when I heard that I would be joining the unique community of fellow activists and meeting them several time throughout the year. “It’s better to light a single candle, than to curse the darkness.”
