Press Release 31st January 2014
With 86% of students achieving 5 or more grades A*-C at GCSE, Hazelwood College is one of the top performing non-selective schools in Belfast and with record numbers attending our recent open night, you might think things couldn’t get much better at the College. However student transfer requests have been flooding in at an unprecedented rate, meaning this week we are celebrating the enrolment of our 900th student, the largest ever number of students at the College.
To celebrate this event, Abigail Monahan, our 900th student, was joined by Mrs Noreen Campbell, Chief Executive of NICIE and the Chairman of the Hazelwood College Board of Governors, Mr Trevor Parkhill and presented with a brand new iPad!
Noreen Campbell, CEO of NICIE said: “This is indeed a historic moment for Hazelwood Integrated College and for the wider community of North Belfast. Over the years, since its foundation in 1985, Hazelwood has grown steadily in response to parental demand in the North Belfast area. It provides both integrated education and educational excellence, serving the needs of individual students, the local area and future society. The school educates together both our main traditions and those of no faith and is equally welcoming to the many newcomers to the area who greatly enrich the life of the school.
“NICIE congratulates the Principal, staff and governors of the school as they reach this new and significant landmark in their development.”
Mr Parkhill said: “This high enrolment is the result of many factors, most notably our strong commitment to high quality and inclusive education, as well as to the retention rates of our students moving from GCSE to Post-16. Our new ‘7 year curriculum for all’ has received a great vote of confidence from parents and students, a recent College survey showed that 80% of parents gave the school an excellent performance score.”
The rise in student numbers at Hazelwood College is a great sign of not just parent and student faith in the quality of education they receive at Hazelwood College but also in their belief in Integrated Education.
