‘Beyond Forgiving’ – Press Notice
On Thursday 29th May, Hazelwood College, in partnership with Start360, will host the South African protagonists of the award-winning short film ‘Beyond Forgiving’.
To mark 20 years since the end of apartheid, three UK charities will take this newly released documentary on tour in a bid to continue spreading Mandela’s message about the redemptive power of forgiveness.
Ginn Fourie – whose daughter Lyndi was murdered 20 years ago in the Heidelberg Tavern Massacre in Cape Town – will be accompanied throughout the tour by Letlapa Mphahlele. As the former Azanian Peoples Liberation Army leader, Letlapa ordered the fatal retaliatory attack responsible for Lyndi’s death in response to the killing of black school children by the South African Defence forces.
Beyond Forgiving takes viewers on an inspiring journey towards showing how a white Christian mother’s quest for catharsis led to a deeper understanding of why a black atheist politician might once have believed his only option was to meet repression with violence.
This is the first time that Ginn and Letlapa have visited the UK together since the film was made. Their hope is that, in combining public screenings with the chance to hear their powerful story of reconciliation first-hand, they will inspire people to reflect on how they too can seek to ‘build bridges’ in their own lives.
The ‘Beyond Forgiving’ UK tour is being organised by Initiatives of Change, The Forgiveness Project & the Wilderness Foundation. Hazelwood College & Start360 are delighted to jointly host a screening at Hazelwood College which is primarily aimed at young people. The audience for this screening will largely be made up by young people from both organisations.
Press are invited to attend this event.
