Outstanding GCSE Success at Hazelwood

Hazelwood forge ahead in STEM subjects at GCSE!

Hazelwood College is celebrating an outstanding set of GCSE results today with 80% of students achieving 5 subjects at A* – C. STEM subject areas are on the rise with Science, Mathematics and Engineering all achieving higher grades than last year. These results are particularly satisfying as the College has invested greatly in these subject areas. We recognise that achievement in STEM subjects makes our students more successful in the labour market, as many of the fastest growing industries require students who have taken STEM subjects.

Among other top achieving subjects are English Literature, Geography, Media Studies, Home Economics, History, Spanish and Art & Design. Congratulations are due to all our year 12 students and to their parents for their on-going support.

Teachers are to be commended for an amazing set of results across 30 subjects. This continues our improvement journey to become one of the top non-selective schools in Northern Ireland.

Interestingly, many of our top performing students are our international students, from countries including Poland and Slovakia.

Polish student Alicja Pietruszewska said, “I am delighted with my results, I worked really hard, and having come from Poland with English as a second language, I am grateful to Hazelwood and its integrated ethos for helping me to settle in so quickly and achieve my goals. I can’t wait to return to Sixth form in September!”

In Year 11 our early entry GCSE students have also performed extremely well with 24 students achieving grade A*-C in Mathematics and 32 achieving grade A*-C in Science.

Hazelwood Principal, Mrs Kathleen O’Hare  said, “These tremendous results mean Hazelwood will welcome back a very large sixth form and this being our 30th Anniversary year, there could be a no more fitting tribute”.
