Smiles all round at the Big Bang @SciFest North West

Oakgrove IC Big BangFour teams of students from Oakgrove Integrated College competed in the Big Bang @ SciFest North West competition held in St. Mary’s College on Friday 13th June. Achieving a total of six awards, the Oakgrove Students excelled in the event, showcasing their talents in areas of Physical and Biological Science.

Smiles were evident as overall competition winners, Megan Duffy and Zoe Mc Girr accepted their SFI Discover Best Project Award which sees them progress to the SciFest National Final in Dublin in November this year.

Oakgrove IC Sci Fest 2Further success was enjoyed by Jared Coyle, Matthew Mc Cafferty and David Barr who received the SFI Discover Runner-up Best project Award for their investigation into the characteristics of paper plane flight, culminating in the development of the ultimate paper plane.

Two awards were collected by an all female team consisting of Siofra Flynn, Lauryn Moran and Eva O’Connell for their project which examined rotor blade design in renewable energy wind turbines. Having been awarded the Sustainable Energy Award and the Big Bang Award to attend the UK National Science and Engineering Competition Final, the girls and their teacher, Ms Laura Corbett, will compete in Birmingham next March. First year students, Bradley Blackman and Sean Straw won the Big Bang Teamwork Award for their project on “Properties of Granular Materials and Granular Flow”. Finally, Ms Corbett accepted the Seagate Outstanding School Award.

Jill Markham Principal commented: “The outstanding success of Oakgrove Students in the Big Bang @ SciFest North West is a testament to the motivation and enthusiasm of the students who competed, the dedicated team of Science Department Staff at Oakgrove and Roisin Crawford from STEM Aware.”
