Students honoured in prestigious Diana Awards

Amy Garner (12CD) and Kerry Chandler (12LH), two inspirational young people from Hazelwood College were recognised for their dedication and support to others and improving their communities. The students received their prestigious award at Northern Ireland’s first Diana Award ceremony at Stormont Estate on 4th March 2013.

Over thirty young people attended the event, all of which were nominated by their schools or youth organisations in one of the five areas — volunteering, fund-raising, caring, campaigning, anti-bullying or making a positive impact on the lives of others. Amy and Kerry received a prestigious national award and a certificate signed by the British Prime Minister, David Cameron.

Amy achieved the Diana Champion Volunteer Award for her contribution to the Performing Arts competition Rock Challenge. Amy has worked hard to develop the skills of students who are not dance trained and strives to build their confidence and self esteem. Amy is a kind, caring and dedicated student who is a positive role model to her fellow students.

Kerry also achieved the Diana Champion Volunteer Award for her role in promoting Rock Challenge in the College and local community. Kerry has helped to facilitate rehearsals and choreography sessions as well as raise money for Rock Challenge by helping to organise bag packing events at supermarkets. Kerry is caring, energetic and dedicated to the performing arts.

Social Development Minister, Nelson McCausland, who hosted the ceremony, said: “It is important that our young people are encouraged and empowered to develop their skills. Our entire society benefits from the work carried out by volunteers. It plays an important role in giving people a sense of purpose and fulfilment.”

The Diana Award was established in 1999 in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, as a legacy to what the organisers described as her belief in the power of young people to change the world. Amy and Kerry have demonstrated qualities associated with the late Princess such as compassion and a selfless commitment to improving the lives of others. Furthermore, Amy and Kerry now have the opportunity to join the Diana Network which provides opportunities to gain valuable life skills and put these into practice with internships and work placements both in the UK and abroad.
